2023 Points leader Julian Fameliaris heads into Round 5 of the Mobil 1 V8 Supercars Championship at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit this weekend (25-27 August) in search of a big points haul.
The Lube-Net / Di Matteo Racing / Gavin Wilkins Racing Chevrolet Corvette driver holds a 40-point advantage over the rest of the field. This season has seen him take a race win in each round, with three of the four overall wins also behind his name. Fameliaris’ successful wave of results started in February 2022 at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
The weekend will see a three-race, double-points round in which dominance can be decisive on this year’s points table. While Fameliaris is in his best career form, the one accolade that still eludes him is taking multiple wins on a race weekend. Achieving this will significantly aid his quest for his maiden title in the series.
“It is a big weekend ahead for us, and I’m looking forward to Kyalami (Grand Prix Circuit)” says Fameliaris. “Although we still have two rounds remaining, we don’t want to leave anything to fortune, especially with this weekend’s handsome rewards on offer. Realistically, the title can’t be wrapped up this weekend, but we can alleviate a lot of pressure before heading to the shorter Zwartkops Raceway for the final two rounds.”
Friday will see two practice sessions, with the qualifying session scheduled for Saturday morning. The first of three races will take place at 15:30 on Saturday, with Races 2 on 3 at 10:30 and 15:00 on Sunday. Race 1 and 2 will be contested over eight laps, while Race 3 will run over ten laps.
