- 2024 GT and GT2 championships to be decided at Zwartkops Raceway
- Fameliaris is the favourite to retain the GT title
- Compaan only needs 7 points to claim the GT2 championship
The final round of the Mobil 1 V8 Supercar championship will take place at Zwartkops Raceway on 15 and 16 November 2024. Both the GT and GT2 championships are still to be decided, but both Julian Fameliaris (Lube-Net / Di Matteo Racing Chevrolet Corvette) in the GT class and Auke Compaan (Hurricane Automotive Ford Mustang) in GT2 have built up a big advantage over their rivals and are likely to leave the Pretoria West circuit as champions.
When the series last visited Zwartkops Raceway back in September, Fameliaris made it a clean sweep, taking both wins and pole position. If he repeats that feat, none of his challengers will be able to make any impression on the 38-point advantage he holds over his closest rival, Thomas Reib (Mobil 1 / Café 9 Automotive Chevrolet Lumina). The runners-up spot in the 2024 championship is still very much up for grabs. Reib is just nine points ahead of Warren Lombard (Pepboys Automotive Ford Mustang). Both of them have won at Zwartkops this year, making the outcome too close to call. Franco di Matteo (Di Matteo Racing / GWR Racing Jaguar XKR) is not in championship contention but could be in a place to assist his teammate Fameliaris in his quest for another title. Sam Dahl (Arcprotech Ford Falcon) will be making the trip from Finland for the final round.
Auke Compaan (Hurricane Automotive Ford Mustang) is almost certain to be crowned as the 2024 GT2 champion. He only needs seven points to claim the crown from his closest rival, defending GT2 champion Steve Herbst (PREI Instrumentation / PPG Coatings / QI Systems Chevrolet Corvette). Shaun Holtzhausen (959 Panelbeaters & Spraypainters Ford Falcon) missed the last round but should be back at Zwartkops. He has a 21-point deficit to Herbst but, based on a couple of good results earlier this season, could narrow that gap.
After mechanical troubles spoiled his event at the last round, Terry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Ford Mustang) will have another outing in the GTX class. He should be joined by Ben Morgenrood in his Ben Morgenrood Ford Mustang.
African Group Lubricants’ Marketing Manager Nicole Jooste is looking forward to some close contests to see out the 2024 season.: “There’s always a lot of excitement when the titles are still undecided come the season finale, and that is just another good reason for you to join the Mobil 1 family at Zwartkops Raceway this weekend. African Group Lubricants looks forward to the 2024 Mobil 1 V8 Supercars Champions being crowned, especially after witnessing all the hard work these drivers have put into their campaigns this season.”
After Friday’s practice sessions, the Mobil 1 V8 Supercars drivers will take to the 2.4km long circuit for qualifying at 09h40 on Saturday. The first race, over 10 laps, is scheduled to get underway at 13h20 with the 12-lap revese grid second race at 16h10. The entire Extreme Festival race day programme will be broadcast live on the Extreme Festival website.
