The Mobil 1 V8 Supercars competitors will make their second visit of the season to Zwartkops Raceway on 7 and 8 June for the fourth round of the 2024 Championship.

At the opening two rounds of the year, Thomas Reib (Mobil 1 / Café 9 Automotive Chevrolet Lumina) and Julian Fameliaris (Lube-Net / Di Matteo Racing Chevrolet Corvette) shared the wins and second places to be separated by just two points in the championship standings, but things changed at Red Star Raceway last time out. Fameliaris won both races there, while Reib could only manage two third-place finishes, allowing the defending champion to open up a 13-point lead at the top of the championship standings. Warren Lombard (Pepboys Automotive Ford Mustang) had his best outing of the season at Red Star, taking second place in both heats to narrow the gap to Reib in the championship standings. He is aiming to build on that performance at Zwartkops.

Despite missing the last round, Terry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Ford Mustang) still occupies fourth place in the championship. While he has spent some time running at the head of the field in races this season, bad luck has stopped him from converting those positions to race wins. Business commitments in Finland have prevented Sam Dahl from travelling to South Africa for this round, although he should make the trip for each of the remaining events. This will give Franco di Matteo (NHR Mining / Di Matteo Racing Jaguar XKR), whose last outing was spoilt by flu and an ailing car, an opportunity to move up the points table.

In the last round, engine problems in the late stages of the opening heat prevented Auke Compaan (Hurricane Automotive Ford Mustang) from taking the start of the second race. Even so, he still has a comfortable lead at the head of the GT2 championship. His closest rival is Steve Herbst (PREI Instrumentation / PPG Coatings / QI Systems Chevrolet Corvette), who, after a challenging opening event of the season, has consistently been in the points.

Shaun Holtzhauzen (959 Panelbeaters & Spraypainters Ford Falcon) will be back on track after missing the last round. He has shown some good pace this year and has a couple of second-place finishes in his name. Antonie Marx (Reman Africa Chevrolet Lumina) and Andrew Katay (Katay Racing / Inspect Motors Chevrolet Corvette) will both be making their first GT2 appearances of the season.

Izak Spies (Ultimates Chevrolet Lumina) will also be on the Mobil 1 V8 Supercars grid for the first time this year.

African Group Lubricants’ Marketing Manager Nicole Jooste anticipates a competitive weekend to end off the first half of the 2024 Mobil 1 V8 Supercars Championship. “There are quite a number of big names who will do battle this weekend, especially with the likes of Antonie, Andrew, and Isak returning to the grid. Although this event will be the first one of the winter, early indications are that this will see a significant spectator turnout, who will witness Mobil 1’s products put to the most gruelling test in South Africa’s most powerful series.”

Saturday’s first race will be a ten-lap challenge scheduled to get underway at 11h25. The second heat will be contested over 12 laps, beginning at 15h30. Spectator tickets for the Dunlop Winter Extreme Festival will be available at the Zwartkops Raceway entrance. The full Extreme Festival race day programme will be broadcast live on the Extreme Festival website.
